Registration Begins for CCPS 2026 Summer Institutes

Registration is now open for AU students to register for two intensive institutes led by industry experts Quentin Fulks and Laura Uttley. Non-degree and professional students need to apply by April 10. Fulks, Campaign Manager of Harris-Walz 2024, leads the Campaign Management Institute, GOVT 020/520. Uttley, VP of Policy and Government Relations at Woodwell Climate Research Center, leads the Public Affairs and Advocacy Institute, GOVT 022/522. Both institutes teach through instruction and simulations, and rely heavily on case studies. Both institutes also feature guest speakers who are veteran and current practitioners, sharing best practices and real-world experiences with the students.

Congress On Demand 2026 Senate Edition

Primary season 2026 has begun, which means the 2026 Senate Election Edition of Congress on Demand is a must-see resource. COD was conceived so that what is public can finally reach voters in a familiar and engaging way. Though sessions in Congress are filmed, COD delivers videos in the short, single-click on-demand format to which we've all grown accustomed. The 2026 Senate Election Edition features floor speeches made by all Senators and Representatives running for Senate seats in the mid-terms. The Congress On Demand 2026 Senate Election Edition is proud to be recognized by 250+ at American University, a year-long initiative marking our nation’s 250th anniversary through dialogue, learning, and civic engagement.

The 2024 Senate Election Edition of Congress On Demand followed thirty-four races that determined the balance in the U.S. Senate. Congress on Demand also included all floor appearances of Sen. JD Vance - the Republican Vice-Presidential nominee. Additionally, users can access the 2020 Presidential Election Edition of Congress on Demand to view appearances made by Kamala Harris in the 116th Congress, her last as Senator. Questions? Barker Argues for Compromise

On March 18, Dr. David Barker, who is a Professor of Government in the School of Public Affairs, the former CCPS Director, and a Nonresident Senior Fellow at Brookings Institution, shared research from his latest book 'Dealmakers,' and posited that Claude, Gemini, and Chat GPT might be the secret sauce of effective negotiating—and of democracy more generally.

CCPS: Dialogues on Democracy

The Center for Congressional Presidential Studies is proud to announce, and very grateful to receive, a generous gift from Distinguished University Emeritus Professor Jim Thurber and his wife Claudia Thurber. Their gift will fund the Center’s Dialogues on Democracy, an ongoing series of conversations with prominent thought leaders about how to strengthen democracy in the US and abroad. In 2021, their inaugural year, the Dialogues drew nearly 500 attendees per event, featuring Senator Cory Booker, House Majority Whip James Clyburn, author/journalist Anne Applebaum, and social scientists Robert Putnam and Shaylyn Romney Garrett. Thanks to the Thurbers’ benevolence, vision, and public-spiritedness, the Dialogues will now continue.

Save the Date for an upcoming dialogue with former U.S. Congressman Tom Davis (VA-11) on April 20, 2026 at 6:30 pm in AU's School of International Service Founder's Room. Watch this space for more information and registration.
