First Semester Registration Recommendations
Master of Arts in International Relations (MAIR)
We aim to strike a balance between first-semester recommendations and the flexibility our students require due to their other commitments and/or time zones.
We encourage students to do a mix of Core and one Economics or Methods course in their first semester.
For students taking 6-credits:
Option 1:
- SISG-760 – Global International Relations
- SISG-763 – Research Design/Quantitative Methods
Option 2:
- SISG-762 – Global Governance
- SISG-773 – Introduction to Economics or SISG-764 International Economics
*Note: For students with strong backgrounds in economics, SISG-773 can be waived by passing the SIS Economics Placement Exam. The next exam dates can be found here.
- October 11-17, 2025
- November 6-12, 2025
Economics placement test is needed to take SISG-764.
Option 3:
- SISG-761 – Intercultural Communication
- SISG-763 – Research Design/Quantitative Methods
If you are taking 9-credits, we recommend adding a concentration course to one of the options above. Concentration courses are listed on page 2 of your academic advising worksheet.
New students are encouraged to self-register as soon as possible but are encouraged to discuss their course selections with their academic advisor to get personalized insights for your academic and professional goals.
Note: We recommend students do not take Quantitative Methods & Economics in the same semester.
*Fewer course offerings are available in the summer term.
Master of International Service Online (MIS)
Students are encouraged to meet with your academic advisor to discuss personalized insights.
Recommendations (See your academic advising worksheet):
- Starting with Core courses, if possible.
- Taking economics and methods in different semesters.
Note: Several courses are only offered in specific semesters, so it is important to look and plan ahead to ensure your course choices are offered when you need to take them.
For students taking 6-credits:
Fall Semester:
SIS-686 - Proseminar
SIS-775 - Cross-Cultural Leadership & Management (with in person immersion at AUs campus) - *This has a special registration process through the program office.
Spring Semester:
- SIS-686 - Proseminar
- Economics or Concentration course
Note: The top MIS-recommended economics course is SISG-774 Global Economics & Markets.
Concentration courses are listed on page 2 of your academic advising worksheet.
Summer Semester:
- Methods
- Concentration Course
*Due to limits of summer offerings, we recommend new students meet with the advisor to ensure students are aware of their broadest options.
If students are taking 9 credits, we recommend adding a concentration course.
