Circulating Technology

The AU Library is pleased to loan a wide variety of technological items including Chromebooks, laptops, audiovisual (A/V) equipment and peripheral devices, like adaptors. Items are available to current AU students, faculty, and staff at no charge.

Audiovisual (A/V) Equipment

Our A/V Collection consists of cameras, microphones, audio recorders, video recorders, and accessories for class use, assignments, research and teaching. For a full, detailed list of our equipment and to submit a borrowing request, visit our equipment calendar. If necessary, staff will consult with you to ensure you are receiving the right technology for your project.

A/V Equipment Calendar

Please note: A/V equipment loan periods last at least 1 week and are subject to Community Impact fees; replacement fees will be charged for items damaged, lost, or stolen while checked out. Equipment must be renewed in person. The library makes every effort to have all equipment batteries fully charged, but with high turnover this is not always possible. Plan your project to give yourself time to charge equipment if necessary.

If you are looking for multimedia production resources, visit our Digital Research and Inquiry (DRI) Lab located on the first floor of the library. The DRI Lab has a range of editing software like Audacity, Garage Band, iMovie, and Adobe Premiere. Also, feel free to explore our Sound Effects Collection or email us for more assistance with your project at mediaservices@american.edu.

Peripheral Technology

The AU Library also has peripheral technology available for loan at the Circulation and Course Reserves Desk including calculators, HDMI cables, headphones, adapters, projectors, and more. For a full, detailed list, please visit our visual guide for more information.

Please note: Peripheral technology items loan periods last 4-days and can only be renewed in person. If we are currently out of a particular item, users must wait 4 hours to borrow the same item again, as this allows others who are waiting for the technology a chance to borrow it for their needs. Late returns may be subject to fees. Replacement fees will be charged for items that are damaged, lost or stolen while checked out.

Adjunct Faculty Laptops

We have a small collection of laptops that can be borrowed by active AU adjunct faculty for the duration of the current semester.

To request a laptop, the adjunct's department must request a loan through the Adjunct Faculty Laptop Request form. Requests are only accepted from authorized department administrative staff. When a laptop is available, the adjunct will be contacted by email.

Event and Classroom Support

Our Technology Collection is designed for student, staff, and faculty projects. It is not suited for recording, lighting, or audio amplification of events, conferences, or panels. Events on campus, as well as technology available in campus classrooms, are supported by Audio Visual Services. The Airlie Center does not allow outside AV equipment but provides internal AV support.

Request Technology

The library has a limited number of chromebooks available for students and laptops for adjunct faculty. Through careful analysis we’ve determined that many of our laptops were previously borrowed as a convenience service and less so for actual need. This is why we now only offer Chromebooks for students whose own laptops are damaged and are being repaired. Laptops are available for the teaching needs of adjunct faculty. Equipment can be requested here:
