You are here: American University Finance Communications Campus-Wide Seasonal Switchover from Cooling to Heating

Communication October 22, 2025

Dear AU Community,

We want to share an important update regarding the seasonal transition of the heating and cooling systems in our buildings.

Due to rapidly changing weather and temperature fluctuations in the Mid-Atlantic region at this time of year, timing the changeover from cooling to heating can be challenging. Each fall, Facilities Management monitors the weather closely as we prepare to make the one-time campus transition, doing our best to identify the period that will minimize (but perhaps not eliminate) the potential for too hot or too cold conditions on our campus.

Based on the current long-term weather forecast, Facilities Management has determined that the time has come to switch our campus from cooling to heating. The switchover process will begin Friday morning, October 24, with all buildings having heating capability by the end of the day Wednesday, October 29. This transition will include all buildings on the main campus as well as 4401 Connecticut Ave. NW (WAMU), 4200 Wisconsin Ave. NW, and 4801 Massachusetts Ave. NW (Spring Valley Building).   Please share this information.

With this transition our building set points will also change from 76° F to 70° F in accordance with the University Temperature policy

Tam Bui, Manager of Energy Utilities Operations, will coordinate this process with our Central Plant and Building Maintenance staff, and questions regarding this process can be directed to his attention at x2334. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please contact our 2FIX Customer Response Center on x2349 or email us at  2fix@american.edu.

Please visit Facilities Management’s  webpage for this and all other service interruptions and notifications.

Thank you,

Skip Vaughn
Assistant Vice President of Facilities Management
