For Students Preparing to Graduate
As you prepare to graduate, be sure to read over the following information and deadlines. This page will be updated as additional Commencement details become available.
1. Apply to Graduate
Apply to graduate on Eagle Service and go to Graduation Overview. Connect with your advisor if you have any questions about your graduation application. Students, with the exception of WCL, must submit an application to graduate through Eagle Service by. Applications for graduation will not be accepted after the deadline.

2. Order Your Cap and Gown
Important Information
- Students made eligible to participate in Fall Commencement will be able to order regalia this fall, starting September 30. Students must be made eligible by their academic advisor in order to access the Oak Hall site.
- Your regalia order serves as your registration to participate in the ceremony and signs you up for your tickets and parking pass.
- At Commencement, all graduates must be in regalia unless they are active military in uniform. Anything other than regalia will not be permitted.
- Doctoral degree recipients may opt to purchase custom regalia. The deadline to purchase custom doctoral regalia is Friday, October 24.
- The deadline to order bachelor's, master's, or doctoral rental regalia is Tuesday, November 11.
- If you are borrowing regalia from a previous graduate, please email commencement@american.edu.
3. Verify your Diploma Name
Even if your chosen name has not changed since you first applied to AU, please take a moment to check your application to graduate on Eagle Service to verify that your name is correct. Updates must be made no later than October 20 (updates made after this date should be emailed to Graduation Services).
4. Record Your Diploma Name with NameCoach
NameCoach creates a professional recording of your diploma name. Submissions will be available this fall.
If you do not submit a recorded name, your name will still be recorded, and NameCoach name readers will pronounce diploma names as accurately as possible. Please note that these professional readers have access to a wide library of names/pronunciations if there is not a grad recording on file.
5. Pick Up Your Honors Cords and Alumni Association Medals
Undergraduates eligible for Latin Honors can pick up their gold honors cord at a date to be announced this fall. See Undergraduate Academic Regulations, section 5.5.
Graduates who make a gift of $20.25 or more to the AU area that impacted them most can receive a limited-edition Alumni Association medal. Donate to AU!
6. Collect Your Tickets
Approximately 4 weeks before the ceremony, registered students will receive a unique link to their AU email to access their electronic tickets and parking pass via the ticketing site "Tassel."
Tickets
Six guest tickets will be distributed to students who have registered to participate in Commencement by ordering their cap and gown.
Graduates will not need a ticket for themselves.
Tickets are required for guest admittance to all Commencement ceremonies.
All guests (except children below the age of 3) require a ticket to enter the arena.
Parking Pass
Graduates will receive one parking pass. This parking pass is valid for the School of International Service and Katzen Arts Center garages.
Additional passes are not available. The East Campus Surface Lot is available for parking without a pass on a first-come, first-served basis.
Regular parking permits issued by AU Parking and Commuter Services will not be valid. In accordance with our “Good Neighbor Policy,” parking is prohibited on neighborhood streets.
7. Complete the Grad Census
This annual survey asks main campus graduate and undergraduate students about their experiences at AU and their post-graduation plans, which provides a basis for improving services and support for students and alums. Please complete the Grad Census you receive by email invitation or via this link.
Student Speaker Applications
- Undergraduates, graduates, on-campus, and distance learning students from the graduating class are eligible to compete for the opportunity of a lifetime to address their classmates and other members of the AU Community at the fall ceremonies.
- Each ceremony includes an address by a graduating graduate and undergraduate student speaker. Candidates must be in good academic standing with the university and marked eligible to graduate.

The deadline to submit all materials is 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, October 8, 2025.

To enter the competition, students must submit an online application containing the following:

Résumé

A bio-sketch (150-word maximum)

Draft of the speech they would like to deliver at Commencement if selected.

Headshot (For internal use only. Will not be shared with the judges)

Windows of availability [October 22 – 24] if selected for the final round.

International Grads & Guests
Students participating in Commencement or their guests who are not in the U.S. at the time of graduation and do not have a U.S. passport may require documentation in order to secure a visa to attend commencement.
