The Woodblock Prints of Sandy Walker

Sandy Walker, Artist
Jack Rasmussen, Curator

Sandy Walker’s monumental woodblock prints merge the sensibility of a painter with the discipline of printmaking. Unusual for the medium, the prints are strikingly large in scale, inviting viewers to engage with them physically as well as visually.

Walker’s artistic vision was shaped by a formative move from Washington, DC to a ranch in Wyoming where the vast horizon and solitude of the plains instilled a lasting reverence for nature’s scale. His work ultimately evokes the sublime, inviting viewers to experience moments of awe and heightened awareness within the immensity of the natural world.

If That Makes Sense brings together the culminating work of AU MFA Studio Art candidates after two years of questioning, refining, and pushing the boundaries of their individual practices. The title, a phrase frequently used within the cohort, reflects a shared inquiry into material, concept, and process as they consider what it means to cultivate a studio practice. The works featured in this exhibition mark the moment when ideas, materials, and intentions finally make sense.
