The Academy Honors the Life and Legacy of Professor Concepción Escobar Hernández

We honor the life and legacy of Dr. Concepción Escobar Hernández, who sadly passed on August 28, 2025, in Madrid. Dr. Escobar Hernández led a life dedicated to public service, intellectual curiosity, and fostering cross-cultural diplomacy.

Dr. Escobar Hernández was elected as a member of the UN International Law Commission and served as Special Rapporteur on the Immunity of State Officials From Foreign Criminal Jurisdiction until 2022, preceding AUWCL Dean Emeritus Claudio Grossman. She earned her PhD from the Universidad Complutense of Madrid in 1987 and represented Spain on the international stage, where she participated in pivotal forums advancing human rights.

In addition to her career in public service, Dr. Escobar Hernández was an adjunct professor at the AUWCL’s Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, where she masterfully taught several courses on international law, including a specialized class on International Humanitarian Law. Dr. Escobar Hernández also participated in the 2023 and 2024 Summer Program as a professor in the seminar Derecho Internacional Humanitario. She was also the author of an extensive body of work addressing international criminal law, diplomatic immunity, and human rights. In 2024, she participated in the International Conference on Immunity of State Officials from Foreign Criminal Jurisdiction hosted at WCL (pictured above) and led by Dean Emeritus and special rapporteur Claudio Grossman. Recently nominated by Spain as a candidate for judge of the International Criminal Court, Escobar Hernández was scheduled to stand for election at the end of 2026, when the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute will vote to fill the new term beginning in 2027.Dr. Escobar Hernández’s legacy carries on through her invaluable contributions to the field of international law and the countless students around the world that she inspired. Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family, friends, students, and community who were fortunate to know her.
