Bio
Gül M. Gür is a Senior Lecturer in the Washington Semester Program at the School of Public Affairs, American University, where she teaches courses on identity and intergroup conflict, international peace and security, and political violence. Her recent research focuses on history, memory, and identity, with particular attention to the Cyprus peace process, especially issues of intercommunal trust and distrust and reconciliation in divided societies. Her recent publications include Minority Memory, Identity, and Reconciliation (2025) and the article "Functional Coexistence in Cyprus" (2025).
She also serves as the Secretary of the International Association of Reconciliation Studies (IARS), contributing to global scholarly and practitioner networks on reconciliation and peacebuilding. Previously, she taught courses on global conflict analysis and resolution at George Mason University’s Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution and worked with several non-governmental organizations in Washington, D.C. and Istanbul, including Search for Common Ground, the Institute for Economics and Peace, and the Economic Development Foundation.
She has been actively involved in youth programs, working with young people from conflict-affected regions such as Central and South Asia, Korea, and the United States. She is fluent in Turkish and English.
