Bio
Dr. Brian L. McGowan is a Professor in the School of Education and a nationally recognized scholar, speaker, and consultant. His research and practice focus on college student success, faculty development, and the advancement of equity-minded policies in higher education. With over two decades of experience as a tenured professor, academic administrator, and student affairs educator, he brings a deep commitment to reimagining systems to better serve racially and ethnically minoritized communities in academia. Dr. McGowan has authored more than 40 peer-reviewed publications and secured over $2.4 million in external funding from organizations such as the National Science Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Dr. McGowan’s research interrogates how structures, policies, and institutional cultures shape the experiences of underrepresented students, faculty, and staff, particularly Black men in higher education. A sought-after thought leader, he has delivered over 60 invited talks and workshops across more than 20 campuses and organizations, and presented at more than 50 state, regional, national, and international conferences. His work has been recognized by multiple professional associations for its impact on research, policy, and practice. In addition to his scholarly contributions, Dr. McGowan has provided strategic leadership in advancing teaching and learning through inclusive excellence, faculty development, and antiracist institutional change.
