Dr. Antonio L. Ellis is a Senior Professorial Lecturer in the School of Education at American University, where he trains future special education teachers and leads research on disability studies, equity, and justice in education. He is the Director of the American University Summer Institute on Education Equity and Justice, convening national educators, scholars, and community leaders to address systemic inequities in schools. A former director of special education for the District of Columbia Public Schools, Dr. Ellis brings over two decades of experience as a K–12 educator, leader, and advocate. His scholarship centers on the intersections of race, disability, and educational opportunity, with a focus on culturally responsive and justice-centered practices for marginalized students, particularly Black male students with disabilities and individuals who stutter.
An accomplished author and editor, Dr. Ellis has published numerous books, peer-reviewed articles, and chapters. His recent works include Advancing Special Education Through Improvement Science: A Practical Guide (co-edited with Dr. Sarah Irvine Belson) and Beyond Graduation: Navigating Postsecondary Success for Students with Disabilities. His work has been recognized nationally for advancing inclusion and accessibility in schools, higher education, and faith-based communities. As a special educator and disability justice advocate, he champions universal design in programming, ensuring that all students and community members are welcomed, supported, and empowered to thrive.
