Bio
Anastassiya Perevezentseva is a doctoral candidate at the School of International Service, American University. Her research focuses on contentious politics, populism, and democratic backsliding in Central and Eastern Europe. Her dissertation, expected to be completed in summer 2026, examines the interactions between social movements, political parties, and civil society, and how these dynamics shape movement outcomes.
She is the author of “Swimming Against the Populist Tide: Lessons from Central and Eastern Europe,” published in Frontiers in Political Science (2025), and in 2021 co-published an article with James Bryan on elite responses to protest in Russia in Democratization. In 2022–2023, she was a visiting PhD student at Comenius University in Bratislava while conducting fieldwork. Since 2023, she has served as Assistant Director of International Internships at Lehigh University. Prior to her doctorate, she represented a UN DPI–associated NGO as a youth delegate.
