Frequently Asked Questions
Provides students with answers to commonly asked questions on the Student Planning module, ability to check where they are on the waitlist.
What is Student Planning?
Student Planning is under the Eagle Service umbrella. Student Planning combines degree audit information with the upcoming schedule of classes to enable students to easily plan classes that fulfill degree requirements. And then, allows them to register for those classes quickly and easily, once registration opens.
How do I log into Student Planning?
Student Planning is accessed via the myAU portal at https://myau.american.edu. The Eagle Service link can be found under the Academics menu.
How Can New Students Update a Chosen Name and Pronouns?
AU recognizes that students may use names other than a legal name to identify themselves. Students in on-campus and WCL programs who would like their chosen name displayed across many AU systems are invited to submit a chosen name using the process outlined below.
- The first step to submitting your chosen name is through Eagle Service. Select “User Profile” on the top-right corner. Then, click on the "Edit Personal Identity" button. Adding your chosen name, pronouns, and gender identity here (all optional) will initiate the different technology and campus systems to update your display name. Please note, it takes approximately 24-48 hours for all campus systems to update.
- If new students update their chosen name in Eagle Service prior to July 1st, new student’s One Card (AU ID) will be printed with the chosen first name. If the chosen name is updated after July 1st, new students can email idcards@american.edu and request a new card with their chosen name as long as the old card is returned.
- Updating a chosen name in Eagle Service updates the display name for a student's email address but does not automatically update a student's username (i.e. cz1234a). The first letter of a student's email address can be changed with a request submitted to the Office of Information Technology Help Desk at helpdesk@american.edu.
Please note: The chosen name is not a private name. Your chosen name will display across many campus information systems, so, faculty, staff, and fellow students will be able to see and refer to you by your chosen name. However, not all AU systems have current capacity to display chosen name. For a full list of systems where legal or chosen name show up, and for an FAQ, go to our Chosen Name and Gender Identity Website.
When will I have access to the Student Planning system?
Students always have access to Student Planning, but they will need to wait for the Schedule of Classes to be published to create a plan for an upcoming semester.
The complete priority registration schedule can be found on the Registrar's website at: www.american.edu/provost/registrar/studentservices/registration.cfm.
How do I plan my schedule for the next semester?
- Log into Student Planning via the myAU portal.
- The Eagle Service link can be found under the Academics menu.
- Click on the My Progress tab to review your degree audit information.
- Click on one of the courses that is associated with an unmet requirement.
- Search for available sections, then click Add Section to Schedule.
- Repeat this process until you have filled out a complete schedule.
- You can review your plan via the Plan and Schedule tab.
- You can also search for classes directly via the Course Catalog tab.
How will I know, if I have a stop on my student account?
If you have a stop on your account, a notification will appear in the upper right-hand corner of the Student Planning screen, indicating the reason for the stop and the way to resolve it.
In most cases, you will not be able to register for classes, if you have a stop on your account.
If I add a section to my plan, does it mean I am registered for that class?
No. Adding a section to your plan does not guarantee a seat in that section. You can add any class to your planner that you want; and it will appear in yellow on your plan. When you attempt to register for the section, the registration system will validate that there is a seat available and you meet all of the restrictions and/or requisites.
You are not in the class until you have successfully registered for the class. When you have successfully registered, the class section will have a green check mark in the upper left-hand corner on your plan.
How do I know when my registration appointment starts?
You must log into Student Planning via the myAU portal to find out when your registration appointment time begins.
- In Student Planning, click on the Plan and Schedule tab.
- Toggle to the upcoming registration term to see your registration appointment time displayed, under the term information.
- f you do not see a registration appointment time, it is possible your appointment time has passed and you are now able to register.
- For planned courses a Register button will be available, once your registration time has passed.
- Note: The Register button will be greyed out, if you do not have an appointment time; in this case, please e-mail registration_services@american.edu from your AU e-mail account, including your name and AU ID.
Can I change my registration appointment time?
No. Registration dates and appointment times are determined by student class level and will not be changed.
- At the undergraduate level, groups of students are further segmented, according to the number of credits a student has completed at the time of registration.
- Within credit-limit parameters, students are randomly assigned registration appointment times in 15-minute increments, beginning at 9:30 AM.
A complete listing of the registration dates can be found at: http://www.american.edu/provost/registrar/registrationdates.cfm.
