Bio
Lindsay Kurlak Barclay is a doctoral candidate in international relations, where her research focuses on state-building, political violence, political geography, and post-war transitions. Her dissertation explores subnational variation in state reach in Algeria using geospatial data.
She is actively engaged in conducting policy-relevant research with wide-ranging groups of scholars and U.S. government leaders. She is currently a Senior Research Fellow and Project Manager at the Research on International Policy Implementation Lab (RIPIL), where she supports initiatives to understand the impact of different research translation methodologies. Her work for RIPIL has also explored the use and impact of data and evidence for decision-making across the U.S. Department of State. Additionally, she managed and conducted research for two grants funded by a U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Center of Excellence, the National Counterterrorism, Innovation, and Technology Center (NCITE). These grants focused on the effects of vicarious trauma on counterterrorism professionals and the efficacy of peer support programs in mitigating those effects.
Prior to academia, she was an international development specialist, managing USAID-funded programs focused on conflict mitigation and democratic governance. Her experience includes project planning and implementation, monitoring and evaluation, and technical writing for large and complex development programs in conflict-affected countries. She also served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Morocco as a Small Business Development Facilitator and has conducted fieldwork in Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Morocco.
