You are here: American University President Announcements December 16, 2025
Dear AU faculty and staff,
With our holiday break just around the corner, I wanted to send a quick message to close out 2025 and the fall semester. And while I know that we are all heartbroken by the news of two more tragic mass shootings -- one at a fellow university during final exam prep, the other an antisemitic attack during what was supposed to be a joyful Hannukah celebration -- I am lifted up by the resilience and relentless drive for positive impact that defines this AU community.
This past Sunday, we sent 650 Eagles out into world with inspiring words from Admiral James Stavridis, who told our newest graduates: “Walk today with pride in the knowledge that you will step forth from this university ready to get underway.” In the face of more senseless violence and chaos, we continue to empower lives of service, purpose, and leadership – and change the world for the better one Eagle at a time.
As I greeted each graduate when they crossed the stage, I was reminded that our newly minted Eagles are “ready to get underway” because of you. From the faculty who mentor, guide, and teach our students to the staff who keep our university running each and every day, you make it possible for generations of Eagles to soar. Thank you for everything that you do to ensure that American University is a place where people from many different walks of life, interests, and passions are united by a common purpose to make the world better. I’d also like to add a special thanks for the AU faculty and staff who volunteered their time to ensure that Sunday’s commencement ceremonies went smoothly (especially given the snow and ice), and who went above and beyond to welcome and celebrate our graduates and their families and friends.
And don’t forget, tomorrow from 1 to 3 pm, Mary Ann and I will be hosting our annual holiday party for faculty and staff on the first floor of the Mary Graydon Student Center. We will be collecting nonperishable food items for The Market: AU’s Food Pantry, and gently used clothing for The Fit Closet, which provides professional attire at no cost to our graduate students. I hope to see you for treats and holiday cheer (and a visit from Clawed)!
Thank you for all that you do for this incredible AU community. Wishing you all a holiday season filled with peace and joy!
Warmly,
Jonathan R. Alger
