Bio
Nicole Darnall is a Professor and the Arlene R. and Robert P. Kogod Eminent Scholar Chair in Sustainability at American University, holding appointments in both the Kogod School of Business and the School of Public Affairs. Her research assesses how organizations and individuals can advance sustainability, focusing on organizational structures, technologies, incentives, and capabilities that catalyze transformative change.

Dr. Darnall is President of the Group for Research on Organizations and the Natural Environment, an influential network of more than 2,200 scholars dedicated to advancing sustainable enterprise worldwide. She has served as a Commissioner on the U.S. General Services Administration’s Acquisition Policy Federal Advisory Committee, where she provided strategic guidance on embedding sustainability into over $700 trillion of federal procurement.

In 2024, Dr. Darnall was honored with the Global 50 Women in Sustainability Award, and Stanford University recognizes her as one of the World's Top 2% of Scientists.

An elected Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration, Dr. Darnall holds prestigious fellowships with the Social Science Research Council, the Economic and Social Research Council, the Erasmus Mundus Programme, and the Spanish Ministry of Education.

Before transitioning to academia, she worked as an economist with the U.S. Forest Service and a data analyst at an industrial wastewater treatment facility.
